Consequences of Overstaying in Turkey
Remaining in Turkey after your visa or residence permit has expired results in administrative fines and an entry ban. As of 2026, the penalty system is applied in stages based on the duration of overstay and the applicant's country group.
2026 Deportation Fine — How It Is Calculated
The fine equals 2 times the applicable residence permit fee for your country group, calculated in USD and converted to TRY at the TCMB daily rate on the day of payment.
Example calculation (Group A — USA, Germany, UK etc.):
| Overstay Duration | Fine (USD, converted to TRY) |
|---|---|
| 1 month | 50 USD (25 × 2) |
| 2 months | 70 USD |
| 3 months | 80 USD |
| 6 months | 110 USD |
| 12 months | 170 USD |

Forced deportation, non-payment of fines or repeat violations may result in bans of 3 months to 5 years.
What Is Deportation?
Deportation (sınır dışı etme) is the forced removal of foreigners found to be in Turkey illegally. A deportation order may be issued for:
- Remaining after visa or residence permit expiry
- Entering Turkey without a valid passport or travel document
- Committing a crime in Turkey
- Posing a threat to public order or security
- Applying with false or misleading documents
Contesting a Deportation Order
After a deportation decision is served, there is a 15-day right to appeal at the administrative court. The deportation is suspended during the appeal period.
- Written objection to the Governorship / Provincial Migration Office
- Application for stay of execution at the Administrative Court
- Regional Administrative Court and Council of State applications
Removing an Entry Ban
If an entry ban has been finalised, it can be challenged through:
Consulate application: Those with an entry ban can submit an appeal petition through the Turkish Embassy or Consulate.
Through a lawyer: An administrative application can be made through an authorised lawyer in Turkey. This process typically takes 3–12 months.
