What Is Residence Permit Renewal?
Residence permit renewal (also called extension) means applying for a new period before your current permit expires. When you apply before expiry, your current permit remains valid until the new decision is issued.
When Should You Apply?
It is recommended to apply for renewal at least 60 days before your permit's expiry date. Since appointment slots are often 4–8 weeks in advance, late applications may result in your permit expiring before the appointment.
Warning: Applications made after permit expiry are subject to administrative fines and may not be processed.
2026 Required Documents for Renewal
Most documents are the same as the initial application:
- Passport (with Turkish translation, valid for 60 days beyond permit duration)
- 4 biometric photos (white background, taken within the last 6 months)
- Current residence permit card
- Updated address registration document
- Foreign health insurance policy (for the new period)
- Proof of financial means (bank statement or income document)
- Fee payment receipt
Additional for Short-Term Renewal
- Updated notarised rental contract or title deed
Additional for Family Permit Renewal
- Sponsor's updated residence permit or Turkish ID
- Sponsor's updated income documentation
Application Steps
1. Book Your Appointment
Book through randevu.goc.gov.tr (Göç Randevu System launched June 2024). In Istanbul, appointments are typically 3–6 weeks in advance.
2. Prepare Your Documents
Collect all documents before your appointment. Incomplete documents will result in rejection.
3. Renew Your Health Insurance
Check your current policy's expiry date. Renew early for the new period — applications are rejected if insurance has expired.
4. Pay the Fee
Pay at a tax office, PTT or online banking. Keep the receipt for your appointment.
5. Attend Your Appointment
Bring originals and copies of all documents to the Migration Office on the appointment date.
Common Mistakes
Insurance policy date error: The health insurance start date must be on or before the appointment date. Future-dated policies are not accepted.
Outdated address registration: Mukhtar certificates typically have a 6-month validity. Ensure it is current.
Insufficient bank balance: A minimum 500 USD/month equivalent in TRY must be shown. Provide a bank statement or additional income documentation if the balance is low.
Rental contract not notarised: Notarised or notary-prepared rental contracts are accepted; privately written contracts may not be accepted.
If Renewal Is Rejected
If a renewal application is rejected:
- There is a 15-day right of appeal at the Administrative Court from the date of notification.
- For rejections due to missing documents, the shortfall can be remedied and a new application submitted.
- If there is a risk of overstaying, seek specialist legal advice before leaving Turkey.
