What Is a Short-Term Residence Permit?
The short-term residence permit is the most commonly obtained type of residence permit for foreigners wishing to stay in Turkey for more than 90 days. It is valid for 1 to 2 years and is renewable.
As of 2026, approximately 65% of the foreign population in Turkey resides under a short-term residence permit.

Can I Work with a Short-Term Residence Permit?
No. A short-term residence permit does not grant the right to work. Foreign nationals who wish to work in Turkey must separately obtain a work permit.
Working while holding only a short-term residence permit results in serious administrative sanctions for both the foreigner and the employer.
How Many Years Can It Be Renewed?
A short-term residence permit can theoretically be renewed indefinitely, provided minimum requirements are met at each renewal. However, those who fulfil the 8-year continuous legal residence condition become eligible to apply for a long-term residence permit.
Istanbul Appointment Process
Istanbul has the highest foreign population density in Turkey, so appointments are typically available 4–8 weeks in advance.
Practical tip: Check appointment availability in the early morning (07:00–09:00). The system is updated at this time and cancelled appointments become available.
